  •   Stenocactus crispatus, also called Brain Cactus, is a compact cactus native to Mexico and a member of the Cactaceae family. It grows naturally in arid, rocky terrain where it receives intense direct sun and minimal water, developing the resilience and drought tolerance characteristic of true desert succulents.

The stem is distinctly ridged with numerous thin, wavy ribs that give it a brain-like texture. It reaches 2 to 4 inches tall and forms a tight, rounded body covered in fine spines. The ribs spiral upward and are deeply crimped rather than smooth, creating a sculptural, geometric form.

Small yellow or pink flowers appear in spring and early summer, blooming near the crown when the plant is mature and receives adequate direct sun during the growing season.

It tolerates dry heated air and can stay outdoors in autumn after summer growth slows. Move it outside in summer to strengthen it with direct sun, but bring it back indoors before frost arrives. You can leave it up to ten days without water. This plant works well in small spaces on high shelves, rock gardens, or as part of a bohemian or architectural indoor display. It is pet-friendly and safe to keep around cats and dogs. Propagate it from offsets that form at the base or from seed to expand your collection.

  •   Stenocactus crispatus grows well in direct sun but tolerates bright indirect light and adapts to low-light indoor corners.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season when the soil is completely dry; water once monthly in winter.

Stenocactus crispatus does best in fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 50-80°F and tolerates the dry air of heated indoor spaces year-round.

Stenocactus crispatus is a slow-growing, clumping cactus that does not need regular fertilizer; apply diluted succulent fertilizer once in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and cannot tolerate frost below 28°F outdoors. It grows year-round outdoors in southern California, Arizona, Texas, southern Florida, and Hawaii without protection from winter cold.
